Meet Matthew – Our Director

Cambee Director Matthew driving his VW Van through France

Introducing our Director and huge van lover Matthew Burgon.  If you head to the workshop or speak to us online Matthew is one of the key faces you’ll be seeing, we caught up with him to talk all things van life.

So Matt, what van do you have?  We spend our time in our VW Crafter Long Wheel Base. It’s perfect for getting the whole family and associated paraphernalia on the road!

And what’s the best adventure she’s taken you on?  Last year lazily taking on France. My daughters and I were joined by my mum, my sister and her family for our dream Summer holiday meandering our way around France.

Any recommendations for your favourite campsite? In the UK it has to be Sally Tripp’s Field, East Prawle. This one has no bells and whistles but is in the most beautiful location right on our doorstep. Super close to The Pigs Nose Inn too which is a bonus!

In France Camping Huttopia Lac de Carcans A great site in the woods with a lake on one side and the Atlantic on the other, I love pitching up for a couple of weeks and just staying put, just cycling to explore, the endless flat cycle trails are perfect for the whole family

Why did you start Cambee? I wanted to recapture the fun I had as a kid traveling and camping with my grandparents and share that with my children and family

What’s your dream van adventure? For our next trip we’d love to take on a loop of Scotland. Heading up the west coast possibly up to Orkney then back down the East coast.

When the kids have grown up my wife Saori and I dream if taking 3 months to explore Europe.  No destination just see where the road takes us – the perks of having a house on wheels!

How about your favourite Cambee conversion? Annie was the first Cambee project  and took a year of graft and head scratching.  She paved the way for all the Cambee’s to come so will always be my favourite and was so much fun to work on!

What’s your number one tip for anyone looking to take on their first van adventure?  Take a fire pit and a bag of wood – sitting round the fire late is what camping is all about, whether toasting marshmallows or enjoying a late night whiskey, there is nothing like the heat of the fire on your feet with the cold on your back with a cosy bed waiting a few feet away.

Anything else you want to share?  Keep it simple, gadgets are usefull for keeping the kids happy while getting to destinations but a set of boule and a pack of cards will give you much more enjoyment.

Please do get in touch with the team to pick our brains about your dream camper van project – book an online or onsite meeting here.
